Pulsatility Transfer: Feel the Beat

The New HeartAssist is Designed for Improved Transfer of the Native Human Pulse

It is ReliantHeart’s belief that pulsatility is natural to the human body and some side effects experienced by current generation LVADs may arise from not having the same level of pulsatility as the HeartAssist.  The HeartAssist5’s pulse is not “synthetic”, it is generated naturally by the beating human heart.

In a paper authored by O.H. Frazier,MD, Hassan A. Khalil, MD, Robert Benkowski, BS, and William E. Cohn, MD, titled Optimization of axial-pump pressure sensitivity for a continuous-flow total artificial heart, the authors state:

  • Methods: We modified a DeBakey (former generation of the New HeartAssist VAD) axial-flow pump by increasing its inducer-impeller inlet angle, thereby increasing its pressure responsitivity. We obtained the in vitro pressure gradient response and compared it with those of the clinically used, unmodified DeBakey pump, Jarvik 2000 FlowMaker and the Thoratec HeartMate II.
  • Results: The modified pump (ReliantHeart HeartAssist5® Pump) showed an increased response to changes in the pressure gradient at pump flow rates between 2 and 4 liters/min. The maximum pressure responsivity of the modified pump was 2.5 liters/min/Hg: the corresponding maximum responsivities of the Jarvik 2000, HeartMate II and DeBakey ventricular assist device (VADs) were 0.12, 0.09 abd 0.38 liters/min/Hg. respectively.
